Listening has two stages: decoding the audio message and then understanding the meaning. And problems can appear in only one stage, or both stages.

Each letter of the IPA or the International Phonetic Alphabet represents a phoneme. These are the little pieces of sounds that make up language. But are these phonemes the only thing we need to understand English?
